Tampa, FL – Florida pavement open wheel standout Wendy Mathis kicked off her 2008 quest for the O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series (USCS) Asphalt Thunder championship. The first race of the USCS Asphalt Thunder season kicked off this weekend at Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, GA.

“This track really suits my driving style and after the practice sessions, I was only one-tenth of a second off fast time, so I knew we were going to be fast,” said Mathis. “The track changed a little bit by the time I qualified, but I still qualified in seventh position and I was confident we could get in a strong run.” With qualifying complete the team made some minor adjustments to the car to get ready for the feature. After the green flag dropped, Wendy worked her way past two cars and finished with a well-deserved top five finish.

“I'm really proud of our team,” continued Mathis. “We're a family team and we put in a lot of hours this week to get ready, but we unloaded with a fast car and I drove the wheels off of it tonight. I'm very serious about competing for the championship with the USCS and tonight was the first step in making that happen.”

In addition to her on-track activities, Wendy also appeared live on television station WSST to help promote the weekend's activities at the track. Also, Wendy appeared on two local radio stations and was also interviewed for local newspaper The Cordele Dispatch.
